How FloodSmart Engineering Works
Protecting Homes and Businesses
South-East Queensland is full of interesting stormwater infrastructure. Heavy flood-prone zones and large developments usually require significant and creative stormwater/flooding solutions. Below are some examples that we have stumbled upon over the years.
Hinze Dam, Gold Coast
Located in the Gold Coast Hinterlands, Hinze Dam contains Advancetown Lake as its reservoir and spills into the Nerang River. A great place to visit when the spillway is active.
Hillardt Street, Robertson
Yes, that is approximately 20m of inlet into an underground culvert. The system also contains two 1650mm stormwater pipes. Being the local depression of the area, this system captures a large volume of flows during major flooding and conveys it underneath a residential precinct for approximately 200m.
Colac Street, Kedron
A rare sighting of a suspended tennis court. A slab on the top and a channel underneath with energy dissipation features to reduce flood velocities.
Cornwall & Ridge Steet , Greenslopes
Major flooding during the 2022 February event. As seen, the culverts are almost at full capacity and the images lack clarity due to the flow velocity and turbulence.
Enoggera Road, Alderley
Vertical-grated inlets into an underground tank. The tank contains columns for structural rigidity to uphold vehicle loadings in the service station above.
